Laundry detergent for $8 a year. (Really, we’re not kidding.)

Posted in Bits and Pieces, Family, Product reviews, Things We Love

My husband, Casey, and I have been married for 2 ½ years and we are still trying to figure out what is an appropriate budget. We are constantly altering what we should or should not spend our money on and figuring out how we can save money.  One of my biggest ‘hard pills to swallow’ is buying household cleaners and toiletries.  Why do they have to be so expensive?!  It is very hard walking into Costco and paying 20 plus dollars for detergent! But, I also don’t want to walk around with my clothes all stinky, so I guess I have to submit to the purchase. Until now…

Casey and I traveled back to the Midwest to visit family in the beginning of July. As we were visiting Casey’s brother and his family, the time came when we had to do laundry. Julie (sister in law) said to me, before heading downstairs to commence the process, that the detergent was in a 5 gallon bucket next to the washer and to only use ½ a cup in each load. As I got down to the washer and put the detergent in, I was a little skeptical as to how this homemade detergent was going to work. But, I kept my mind open and was very grateful to be doing laundry!

When everything was said and done and as I was folding our clothes, I was pleasantly surprised at how clean everything turned out! Ok, I thought, there is something to this.  So I asked for Julie’s recipe for the detergent and when Casey and I returned home, I promptly went on the quest to find all of the ingredients (which, after visiting 8 stores, all of the ingredients are at Fred Meyer).

I am happy to report that, for us, this 5 gallon bucket full of detergent will last us approximately just under a year!  When I crunched the number, I was shocked! We spent about 8 dollars for all of the ingredients and it took us about 15 minutes to put together the mixture. 8 dollars! For a year! That, 100%, beats 20 plus dollars every 3 months or so.

I’m not quite sure where Julie got this recipe but I will be using this for a very long time! I hope you enjoy it and I encourage you to try it.  And just think of all the ways you will be saving money!

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap Recipe
1 bar of Fels-Naptha soap
4 c. hot tap water
1 c. washing soda
1/2 c. Borax

Grate the bar of soap with a food grater, and add to a saucepan with the hot tap water. Over medium heat, stir until soap is completely dissolved and melted. Fill a 5 gallon bucket (available at Home Depot with lids) 1/2 full with hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda, and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to the top with hot tap water. Stir well, cover, and let it sit overnight to thicken.

This Laundry soap is basically like a concentrate that you would buy at the store. A little goes a long way! Mix well before each use. (it thickens and gels when it has been sitting) Add 1/4 c. to 1/3 c. per load depending on dirtiness and size of load. I keep a measuring cup on top of the washing machine so I always have it there when I need it! For a 5-gallon bucketful, this recipe costs approximately $2.00 to make, and it washes approximately 180 loads of laundry. (And we still had $6.00 of ingredients left over!)

Hints:

  • Fells Naptha soap, Borax, and Washing Soda are found in the laundry aisle of most grocery stores.
  • This is a great recipe for people with sensitive skin. It contains no dyes or fragrances.
  • It works great when washing cloth diapers! Just add 2 tbsp. extra of Borax to the laundry load, or pre-treat the stains by dissolving 1/2 of Borax in warm water, and soaking the item that is stained. Works great on baby spit-up, formula stains, newborn diaper messes, ketchup, grass stains, etc.

Things We Love: Sparkly Red Shoes

Posted in Bits and Pieces, Product reviews, Things We Love

When I was four, I wanted a pair of white go-go boots. I pined for those boots for at least a year.  Sometime when I was five, my mom bought them for me.  I was in absolute heaven, and wore them everywhere. They were the only (at least that I remember) pair of “non-practical” pair of shoes she ever bought me.

As a mom, I’ve bought dozens of shoes in the past eleven years.  Being a veteran of 5 knee surgeries, 6 years of physical therapy and several pairs of custom-made orthotics, it’s important to me that my children’s shoes are well-made and well fit. (Give me the clothes on sale or from consignment stores!) Going to a high-quality shoe store doesn’t leave a lot of money for anything but “practical” on a relatively tight budget.

However, my third baby was a GIRL. And being a shoe lover myself, you can imagine what visions went through my head. When I went to Nordstrom, I was seriously disappointed in the girl’s shoes “cute factor”. So I did what any internet-savvy mom would do – went online.

I found the most adorable line of shoes (from Italy!) called “Jumpin Jacks” and went on a hunt for them. In the process I discovered The Shoe Zoo. The Shoe Zoo is by far my FAVORITE shoe store ever. They only carry shoes for children – from Vans to Geox, and See Kai Run to Stride Rite. And the prices – about the same as Nordstrom.

But the best thing of all – I’ve needed to buy far fewer pairs of shoes from The Shoe Zoo. The owners are so good at fitting my children (they’ll even make shoe suggestions based on the shape of their feet), that the shoes we buy fit longer than I was used to.

I’ve even gone intending to buy new shoes, and instead of taking the opportunity to sell me new ones, they’ve said, “These still fit. Come back in April.”

As for the Sparkly Red Shoes… Natalie had been eyeing them at The Shoe Zoo for about 2 years, and remembering my long-awaited impractical white go-go boots, I finally bought them. And the look on her face made it totally worth it.

But the thing I love? The owner of the store said, “Buy them a size big, and we’ll put special inserts in them for now to make them smaller, and then take them out when her foot grows. You’ll have the shoes longer that way.”

Wow! What great customer service.

Potty Trainer Review

Posted in parenting, Product reviews

We just started part-time potty training with my son Isaac (27 months). I worry about making it too big of a deal so I am keeping it very relaxed and low key. I know there are potty-training-Mommy-professionals out there who are snickering, but I thought I would share our experiences thus far.

I bought this lovely “device” called The Freedom Trainer. You can find it online at their website or any retail site like Amazon or Diapers.com. We had a small/portable potty seat, but he likes this toilet better. Why? I believe there are many reasons, but the most important is that Isaac can use the same potty Mommy uses! Our children love to do what we do; cooking (all those toy kitchens out there), cleaning (toy vacuums), etc. I guess even pottying makes the list.

Isaac also love that he can climb up and down on his own, and he relishes that independence! There are handles on the sides to help him feel steady. He’s so confident on it, that when it is time for him to poop (which he has done several times already) he says “bye-bye” to us, to shoo us out of the bathroom. We shut the door, and he uses the potty all by himself. Isaac yells at us when he is done (“help please!”), and he’s so proud of his accomplishment!

Now, we may have a magical child that is able to be trusted in a bathroom by his lonesome, but I am sure he is not the only one. That is why I thought I would share our new favorite potty with you. Isaac didn’t like the tiny portable potty. He didn’t like the potty books, but he does like the Freedom Trainer!

I love it because I don’t have to clean out a potty chair. We just flush the toilet and are done!
