The Direct Effects of Musical Training on Language Skills
Posted in Child DevelopmentI was totally mesmerized when I saw this. I think you will be, too.
Research done by Nina Kraus at Northwestern University’s Auditory Neuroscience Lab provides a fascinating look into why musical training as a child will actually enhance your child’s language skills.
So why is music effective for assisting language development? Here are some of the reasons:
- music and language both have structure and rules
- music ensures that the words are sequenced in a predictable order
- music offers a fun opportunity to learn new words and concepts through repetition
- music encourages turn-taking (just like in conversation)
- music, like language, has rhythm
- music has rhyme, which encourages children to become aware of words and their sounds
- music assists children to remember new words
