10 Ideas for a Fun, Kid-Filled New Year’s Eve Party!

Posted in Things to do

happy-new-year1)  Start the Celebration at 6pm (that’s 9pm EST)!

2)  Give your child a camera and see what the New Year will look like from their eyes! It’s twice the fun when you re-visit those images at the end of the year to see what they capture a full year later.

3) Instead of fireworks, try making your own confetti!

4) According to Cookie Magazine, while we wait for the ball to drop in New York City, Spaniards wait for the clock-tower bell in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol to strike midnight. It is a tradition to eat one grape with each ring. Toast the kids with sparkling cider, and eat 12 grapes each to bring luck in the coming year.

 5) Verbal resolutions? This year make a family time capsule and fill it with your goals and aspirations as a family for the New Year. See what you have accomplished by Jan 1, 2011.

6) New Years Eve is all about the hat! Go to your local craft store and buy markers, gel pens, feathers, and other adornments to embellish your own hat. Then have a contest for the funniest, most creative, most eccentric.

7) Make Music! What kid doesn’t love a noisemaker? Use household items such as empty plastic pop bottles with dry beans or an oatmeal container. Cover them with construction paper, wrapping paper, stickers etc. Tie several strands of curling ribbon to the top.

8) Create Your Own 2010 Family book. Take a picture of everyone in your family and scrap together a book featuring a montage of your family that night. Everyone gets his or her own page with an area to write or draw a picture. Laminate and bind. Make this a family tradition and see the collection you’ll create over the years.

9) Dance in the bubbles! Kids love bubbles. Have a bubble party and don’t forget to hug and kiss during the fun.

10) Ring in the New Year with a Signature Family Beverage Tradition! Try a Pink Sparkling Punch. (Tip: Canada Dry’s Cranberry Ginger Ale is a super hit also!)

Pink Sparkling Punch
1 12-ounce bottle white grape juice
1 6-ounce can frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed
1 16-ounce pkg. frozen whole strawberries, thawed
1 12-ounce can lemon-lime soda, chilled
8 cherries (optional)

Combine 1/2 of the grape juice, lemonade, and strawberries in a blender. Whirl until smooth and pour into drink container. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with remaining juice, lemonade, and strawberries. Add soda and stir well. Pour into 8 fancy plastic glasses. Add a cherry to the glass for garnish.

Variation: You can substitute regular grape juice for white grape juice.

Things we love: Belli Skin Care

Posted in Things We Love

We recently asked several Studio3Music moms to use a product called Belli Acne Clearing Facial Wash for 2 weeks, and then to give us their honest opinion.

belli-acneHere’s a little more about the Belli Skin Care line:
At Belli, we support expectant and new mothers through this changing time by providing soothing, balanced skin products that pamper and protect. Our collections – Belli Pregnancy, Belli Motherhood and Belli Baby – address the specific needs of each stage, with thoughtful attention to the safest formulations.

Belli Pregnancy has set a higher standard for prenatal safety, as the only skin care line in the world that is teratology screened.  We search through over 16 million medical research articles in over 5000 international journals, and use this information to exclude ingredients with even remote links to birth defects or other problems with pregnancy

Belli Motherhood is LactMed screened to avoid ingredients linked to harmful effects during breastfeeding. Belli Baby is screened for xenoestrogens—chemicals which can act like hormones that interfere with normal development of the reproductive system.  So no matter which Belli products you use, you can have peace of mind erring on the side of caution.

At Belli, our love of pregnancy and motherhood guides everything we do. Our goal is to support and encourage new mothers, inspiring self-confidence and greater safety in both pregnancy and parenting.

Here’s what our moms had to say:
In the past, I’ve visited dermatologists for help with a mild acne problem. I would always stop using the acne soaps and lotions within a week or two because of the scary warnings and mystery ingredients. “Never use this product if pregnant” or “Stay out of direct sunlight” they would say. That made me so nervous that I couldn’t keep using the products (on my face of all places!).

I have been using Belli’s Acne Cleansing Facial Wash for the past few weeks and it is so wonderful. It smells lemony and feels refreshing on my face. The best part about it, though, is that I feel totally safe using it while breastfeeding, or even while pregnant. It uses lactic acid, which kills germs safely, along with soothing cucumber. I wish I had known about this product line sooner. I will definitely be using their Elasticity Belly Oil during my next pregnancy, too!
- Erika Ellis

So for the past 2 weeks I have been using Belli’s Acne Cleasing Facial Wash.  I was pleasantly surprised with the results!  I have 2 boys ages 2 & 4 and I am NOT pregnant, but giving birth and being a mom does take it’s toll on your body.  I have been having the worst problems with my skin and I just didn’t want to spend a lot of money of cleansers with chemicals!  The Belli facial wash was just what my skin needed.

After the first 5 days I really noticed a difference in the skin texture of my face.  It was smoother and softer.  The blemishes were less “angry” looking and clearing up.  I also stopped getting new blemishes.  By the end of 2 weeks I still have a pimple here and there but am not seeing the excessive breakouts that I have been getting for the past 18 months.  I will definitely continue using the Belli acne facial wash and I’mloving it withOUT being pregnant!

A Fix For Colic?

Posted in Bits and Pieces, parenting, Village

colic-babyThere really should be a support system for parents of colicky babies. These moms and dads rev themselves up for the toughest, most grueling, most heartbreaking ride of the day: the uncontrollable wail of their colicky baby. They try to remind themselves to stay calm and focus on getting through the spell.  They remind themselves that eventually there will be a light at the end of the tunnel when their baby is 3 or 4 months old.

We were those parents this past July and August.  We bounced, wrenched our backs, and parched ourselves trying to provide solace for our baby Kate when her colic spell would start. It wasn’t until the end of the summer, that I decided to try some of the baby exercises I had learned in my Kindermusik Village classes. After the first round of exercises, I noticed immediate relief. Also, every time, roughly five minutes after our baby exercise activity, Kate would get further relief through a bowel movement. Whether it was distraction, GI tract assistance, or lessening her stimuli, we found a way to cope with colic through a Kindermusik technique.

Right before the spell of colic kicks in, try some baby exercises. Lay your baby down on a soft blanket and think of your favorite nursery rhymes such as, Hickory Dickory Dock, Hey Diddle Diddle, Deedle Deedle Dumpling, and/or Wee Willie Winkie. Chant or sing the rhymes while moving  your baby’s arms up and down separately and then at the same time. Then, move his legs in the same pattern as well as in a circular bicycling motion.  Finish by touching one hand to his opposite foot (for example, right hand to left foot).  Be sure to repeat on the other side.  In Village class, Miss Allison calls this movement “crissy crossy.”  These cross-lateral movements require communication between the two sides of the brain and therefore also exercise baby’s brain.

Here’s another one: Your baby is again lying on her back. Place her heel up next to her bottom by bending her knee sharply. Move the leg, still sharply bent, until the top of the thigh rests against the tummy. Get both legs in this position. Your baby may be a tad confused at first, but later she will actually assist you-babies love this so! Grab her baby’s ankles and gently shake her legs in an up-and-down motion, unbending the knees gradually, until her heels rest on the blanket and her legs are straight. Repeat multiple times.

Pediatricians do not have a definitive conclusion regarding the cause of colic. There are ideas such as: diet, temperament, acid reflux, indigestion, allergies or a natural developmental stage.  However, the consensus on how to manage colic is fundamentally similar:  provide comfort measures like soothing through movement, a warm bath, rocking, or playing music.

Whether it is mere distraction from the pain or assistance to the digestion system, these exercises may aid in a less intense crying episode. The activity will definitely provide YOU with meaningful interaction with your baby during what is often a frustrating time.  Additionally, songs and rhymes reduce stress and promote language development.

There really is something behind all those facts and tips our teachers provide us in class! Thanks Miss Allison, you were right.  We didn’t have to just wait out the spells of colic.  It’s all about taking what you learn in class and applying it at home.

Reuse, Reduce, Recycle while looking good this holiday season!

Posted in Things We Love, Uncategorized

cruzinkidzlogoIn these economic and global times, we can find ways to maximize budgets while still enjoying quality and in some cases quantity of goods through re-using. I remember 3 years ago when Analiisa handed me a bag full of Natalie’s clothes for Hallie. I seriously thought I had won the lottery! There were terrific ensembles- I swore Natalie maybe wore these once or twice. Since that day, I have been addicted to consignment boutiques both as a customer and a consigner. As we all know, Eastside and Seattle mamas have style!

Last semester in one of my classrooms, a mother mentioned checking out Woodinville’s Cruzin Kidz boutique and consignment for my new baby. She deemed it ‘the hottest one-stop shop here on the Eastside’. She wasn’t kidding! I personally have purchased Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bags, bedroom décor, DVD’s, new See Kai Run shoes, excellent books, new hair accessories and double jogging strollers from Cruzin Kidz within the past six months. I figure, why not enjoy saving money while wearing our favorite brands and styles!

Therefore, as a special Thank You to our Studio3Music friends & families, we invite you to the first exclusive after-hours Sip & Shop Holiday event at Cruzin Kidz this Friday, Nov 13, from 7pm-9pm.

Grab your girlfriends and join us for an exclusive, adult-only Studio3Music & Cruzin Kidz after hours Sip & Shop event. As a Thank You to our Studio3Music friends & families, we have partnered with Woodinville’s premier consignment boutique, Cruzin Kidz to offer you a one night only pre-holiday shopping spree with unbeatable pricing, brand name clothing and accessories, all sizes, products, equipment and more. More Please, Daddy!

Posted in Bits and Pieces

I started Village classes with my daughter Hallie when she was 3 months old. Call me crazy, but I had just returned to work and was struggling with “working mom guilt.” Then, I caught wind of a music class geared toward babies & parents. “The Village Escape,” as I called it, was my time to bond with Hallie and I loved every moment of it.

The only problem was that my husband did not have a “thing”, an activity to do with Hallie. He struggled to find a way to connect with her. A few months later, I heard that Studio3Music had an opening in the Saturday Sign & Sing class. I’ll never forget my husband’s response after the first class, “I really liked it. It’s a product class, and I’m all about results.”

sign-and-sing-pleaseHe was able to connect with Hallie in the Sign & Sing (S&S) program because it was results geared. Each Saturday, he came home with a set of new signs he had learned. The S&S classes allowed him to communicate with his daughter in a fun, musical, informative, and educational manner.

We once heard that children are nurtured by their mothers and learn about the world from their fathers. This motto held true in our case. Dave was able to strengthen his communication bond, his emotional bond, and his creative bond while letting go and just having fun. To this day, he still recalls singing “Apples & Bananas,” and pulling Hallie in her pretend car. What he remembers most though, are those moments in class when he saw the smile on her face as she would giggle and sign “more.”
