Oh, the places you’ll go!

Posted in Bits and Pieces

oh-the-places-youll-goDr. Seuss sure knew what he was talking about when he wrote Oh the Places You’ll Go, the ABC book and of course Green Eggs & Ham. I have to admit I was not a faithful Dr. Seuss fan in my childhood. I preferred anything having to do with the Berenstein Bears and Shel Silverstein. My most favorite book of Shel’s was The Giving Tree.

Reading these books again reminds me of an intriguing, innocent and imaginative place that I once knew as my own fantasyland. Leave it to my daughter to show me the way back to that enchanted place where I can escape into the book and become part of the story.

Analiisa asked me to write about my favorite places to go with Hallie. The truth be told, one of our favorite places her reading nook at home with a stack of books that range from Dr. Seuss, Berenstein Bears, Dora the Explorer, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, to our Kindermusik books. Hallie has discovered the fascination of reading to herself and creating her own narratives with every turn of the page.

We all have heard that we need to read to our children at least 20 minutes a day. King County Library System (KCLS) has made it easier for us parents to access recommended books for our babies, toddlers and preschoolers with age appropriate booklists posted on their website.

Miss Allison’s Wyoming Winters

Posted in Uncategorized
My favorite season is winter.  That’s a good thing when you live in Wyoming.  You get a lot of winter there.  It starts in early October, and the mid-November snow doesn’t melt until March.

When I was in second grade, we had a three-day blizzard that shut the city down for almost a week. No one went anywhere during the blizzard, due to the white-out conditions and a howling, bitter cold wind. We couldn’t see any of the other houses in our subdivision.  We had no power and no phones. All the food from the deep freeze went into a cooler in the yard.  Since we were an experienced Wyoming family, my Mom kept a winter pantry that would have made Ma Ingalls proud.  We cooked on our camping equipment and used a heater of some kind to keep the dining room warm enough for Monopoly.  I don’t remember who won, but I know we made up rules that don’t really exist and kept game going for three days.

When the snow stopped, the fun began.  On one side of our house the wind had banked the snow up to the roof. Every kid in the neighborhood was sledding off our roof.  My dad cut an ice staircase with his ice axe on one side of the bank.  We also had a blast inner-tubing on Old Baldy, a hill just down the street.

It took a week to dig paths to the doors of the school. Once they could get the doors opened, they made us go back.  We had our Halloween party on November 6th.   My Princess costume was very cute at school.   But no one could actually see your costume when you trick or treated in Wyoming because you had to wear your heavy winter coat and a hat and mittens over it.  And forget about princess shoes.  You usually wore your snow boots.

In all the years we lived in Wyoming, there was only one White Christmas.  Oh, there was always snow on the ground at Christmas time.  But it was usually left over and dirty and brown. The year it snowed at Christmas was the year we went to Florida to see my Grandparents, which is a whole other story.  Nine people in a van going cross country…. I did have an exciting childhood!
