Dance and Freeze!

Posted in Child Development, Things to do

Do you want your toddler to be able to stop when you tell them to? Good luck with that… Actually, it’s called “inhibitory control”, or the ability to stop oneself and wait.

Toddlers love stop and go games because they allow them to practice control over their physical bodies and to revel in mastery of this control.

As a preschooler, inhibitory control is important in social interactions where taking turns is involved, and then becomes an important skill for success in school.

Your child’s energy can really build up, especially when weather forces you indoors. Here’s a fun game to develop inhibitory control:

  • Put on a lively CD. Grownup OR kid music – something fun to dance to.
  • Press play.
  • Dance!
  • Every so often, pause the recording. Everyone dancing (including you) should freeze!
  • After each freeze, have someone call out a new movement word, like twirl, twist, leap, wiggle, or tiptoe.
  • Dance again, moving the new way.
  • Repeat!
